Two-Thirds Rear Overhang Worksheet
CALIFORNIA • SEMITRAILER WORKSHEET

Two-thirds rear overhang

Enter the axle spacings below to calculate the rear-overhang limit under California Vehicle Code §35410.

Measure the right wheelbase. For a semitrailer, use the distance from the tractor’s rearmost axle to the semitrailer’s rearmost axle. Tractor axle spacings ahead of that starting point are excluded. Measure each spacing from axle center to axle center.

1. Axle spacings

Number all axles from front to back, starting with axle 1 at the front of the truck. Enter feet, inches, or both. Decimal inches are accepted. Only spacings from the tractor's rearmost axle to the trailer's rearmost axle count toward the legal wheelbase.

The result is measured behind the last point supporting the load—not behind the rear axle. Displayed feet and inches are rounded down to the nearest ⅛ inch so the displayed allowance does not exceed the calculated limit.

2. Optional: check actual overhang

Enter actual rear overhang to compare it with the calculated limit.

Scope: This worksheet calculates only the §35410 two-thirds rear-overhang limit for a semitrailer. It does not determine full legal or permit eligibility. The separate §35414(a) length exemption concerns specified cargo up to and including 80 feet, specified equipment, and its statutory conditions; 80 feet is not a universal overall vehicle-length allowance.
